The Wisconsin DNR reports a VERY HIGH fire danger. Dry conditions mean fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and become difficult to control. Drivers on U.S. Highway 10 in Waupaca County should prepare for construction delays this summer and fall. Road work from Anderson Road to Appletree Lane runs May through August, while work from Old WIS 49 to the Winnebago County line begins in mid-July through October. At least one lane in each direction will remain open during construction. Motorists are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and give road crews room to work safely.
 
The city of Waupaca Parks and Recreation Board meets this afternoon at 5:15pm in the City Council Chambers at Waupaca City Hall.  The meeting which is open to the public includes a review of the department’s annual report, a look at the Rec Desk contract and a recreation program update.  The agenda is posted online at City of Waupaca dot org.
 
Lastly, congratulations to the Waupaca High School Math Team, who wrapped up an outstanding season last week at its banquet on the UWSP campus. Several students earned top-10 finishes in the Central Wisconsin Math League, including Amy Chen, Peyton Koeppler, Maggie Miller, Oliver Funk-Rusch, and Noah Kolinski. Noah made league history by earning a perfect score of 300 and becoming the first student in the league’s 56-year history to win the Advanced division four years in a row.

Waupaca City Council meets tonight at 6pm in the Council Chambers, lower level of City Hall. The meeting, which is open to the public, will feature a public transportation update and an Ordinance Repealing and Replacing Chapter 20, City of Waupaca Floodplain Zoning Ordinance. The agenda may be viewed online at City of Waupaca dot org, and the meeting may be viewed on the City’s Facebook Page, Win-TV and heard on Waupaca Radio.
The city’s public engagement committee meets tomorrow at 1pm in the Council Chambers, lower level of Waupaca City Hall. On the agenda is a discussion on city social media usage and KPI tracking. The meeting is open to the public and the agenda may be viewed online at City of Waupaca dot org.
Lastly, as the weather warms up and more people are out on bikes, the City of Waupaca is reminding riders to keep safety top of mind. Officials say cyclists using sidewalks should slow down around pedestrians, signal when passing, and stick to a single-file pace. A friendly bell or quick “excuse me” can go a long way. The city also encourages using designated downtown routes. Bottom line, share the space and keep it safe for everyone.

There was a brief scare in Waupaca Friday afternoon that led to road closures and a bomb squad response. Authorities say a citizen brought what appeared to be old dynamite to the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office around 2:26 p.m. The individual believed the explosives dated back to the 1920s and were in unstable condition. As a precaution, the area was secured until the Brown and Outagamie County Bomb Squad arrived. Trained technicians safely removed the dynamite and later detonated it in a controlled environment.
Winchester Academy is hosting a special history program tonight. “Black on the Wisconsin Frontier, 1725 to 1868” begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Waupaca library lower level meeting rooms. UW–Madison professor Christy Clark-Pujara will discuss the lives and contributions of free and enslaved Black residents in early Wisconsin, highlighting often-overlooked stories from communities across the state. The program is free and open to the public with coffee and cookies preceding the program starting at six. Details online WinchesterWaupaca.org.
The city of Waupaca Water and Sewer utility board meets tomorrow at 1pm in the Council Chambers lower level of Waupaca City Hall. The meeting is open to the public and agenda is posted online at City of Waupaca dot org.
Lastly, the Waupaca Area Public Library is hosting a Lunch and Learn program this Wednesday. The event runs from noon to 1 p.m. and features Breanne Yeska sharing the history of the Indian Crossing Casino, a landmark on Columbia Lake with more than a century of local significance. Attendees will hear stories from past owners and learn about the venue’s role in the community. The program is free, but registration is required online at WaupacaLibrary.org.

Waupaca residents can dig deeper into gardening skills tonight at the Waupaca Area Public Library. A program called “Seed Saving 101 Plus” with Angie Peterson runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The class goes beyond the basics, teaching participants how to collect and separate seeds from flowers and vegetables. Attendees will also take-home seeds and other gardening resources. Library officials say the workshop can help gardeners save money and prepare for future growing seasons.  Registration is required at Waupaca Library dot org.
 
Volunteer Waupaca is preparing for a great community event as the Volunteer Waupaca Day of Service returns on Saturday, May 16th. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Upper South Park, where volunteers will gather before heading out to work on projects throughout the community. The day wraps up with a celebration including refreshments, entertainment, and prizes. Organizers say the family-friendly event brings residents together to make a positive impact, with free t-shirts available for the first 150 participants.
 
Lastly, City of Waupaca officials are reminding residents to clean up after their pets. Under city code, pet owners must promptly remove and properly dispose of any waste left by their animals on public or private property. Officials say it’s also unlawful to walk a dog without having a way to pick up after it. The reminder comes as part of ongoing efforts to keep neighborhoods clean and safe.
